Operation Iraqi Freedom II – Return to Iraq 2004
Matthews is a graduate of Elon University. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel with 30 years active and selective reserve service in the U.S. Marine Corps. Primarily an Aviation Logistics Officer, he relinquished a 2-year command billet as Commanding Officer of Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 42 at NAS Atlanta, two days before 9/11. Other duty stations include MCAS Beaufort, NAS Andrews, MCAS Miramar, and various deployments overseas.
During Operation Iraqi Freedom, Matthews served with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing as Assistant Chief of Staff for Aviation Logistics Department (ALD) and as the ALD Operations/Plans Officer. His personal awards include the bronze star and numerous personal and unit achievement commendations.
He is a life member of the Marine Corps League and has served in many leadership positions, including three years as Commandant of the Greensboro Detachment and currently the Chairman of the War Memorial Foundation / Carolina Field of Honor.
Matthews is President of Filtration Technology, Inc., a Greensboro supplier of industrial and commercial air filtration products, industrial filtration equipment and a turnkey cleanroom contractor. He and his wife, Kimberly, have two grown children.
