Charles was born and grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina until 1960 when he moved to Asheboro. He attended college at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Guilford College. Charles and his wife, Sandra met in high school and have been “Love at First Sight” sweethearts ever since. They were married in 1962 and have three married children and are blessed to have seven awesome grandchildren ages 27 to 21.
Charles has been a member of the Rotary Club of Randolph (Asheboro) since 1993 and served as club President in 1999-2000. He has served as International Service Chair & International Projects Chair coordinating the club’s International Service participation in projects in Nicaragua & India.
He served as the District 7690 Rotary Foundation Annual Giving Chair during 2002 – 2003 and Assistant Governor from 2003 through 2006 and in 2008-2009 he served as District 7690 Governor. He has been District Rotary Foundation Chair, and fulfilled many leadership roles in Zone 33. He currently serves District 7690 as the PolioPlus/END POLIO NOW Chair.
In 2011, Charles traveled to India to participate in a Polio National Immunization Day near Calcutta. He was privileged to have his then 19 year old granddaughter Emily accompany him and participate. They were involved in a NID Mop-Up Day of immunizations in Maharashtra, India, site of the last major outbreak of Polio in India.
Charles and Sandra are Multiple Paul Harris Fellows, Paul Harris Sustaining Members, Benefactors, Major Donors, and members of the Paul Harris Society. Charles was awarded The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service on 28 August, 2012.
