What is The Forge Greensboro?

In March 2023, Lonnie became responsible for providing leadership for the operational activities of The Forge Greensboro, a 501(c)3 nonprofit community makerspace. It is a place where hands-on people can gather to work on projects while sharing ideas, equipment, tools, and knowledge. Members of The Forge come from a diverse variety of backgrounds: entrepreneurs, artisans, trade professionals, hobbyists and students and they enjoy its resources and community. To achieve the goals of the Forge Greensboro, Lonnie is leveraging multiple strategies that include initiating and expanding community partnerships with businesses, foundations and community-based organizations. He has a proven track record of recruiting, motivating and guiding diverse teams of talented individuals to exceed organizational goals.

Lonnie’s early professional career includes working in various retail, not-for-profit organization and education business positions. He has started and operated three small businesses. Most recently he has been the Coordinator for Career & Technical Education at Guilford Technical Community College and Executive Director for Community Engagement at NC A & T State University.

Dr. Cockerham earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Industrial Engineering from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, a masters of Business Administration from Duke University and Doctorate of Philosophy from NC A & T State University. His history of volunteering in support of various community-focused organizations includes Junior Achievement, National Black Child Development Institute, and Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America.
