The History and Treatment of Polio in Greensboro, North Carolina

William L. Tankersley, III, is a native of Greensboro, born July 14, 1948.  In 1953, at the age of five, Bill was diagnosed with polio. After being hospitalized and incapacitated for a period of 10 months, he resumed his active life, graduating through the Greensboro school system, followed by Furman University with a BA accounting degree. Bill worked for the IRS, then attended and graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Law School in 1974, with a Juris Doctor degree with honors. At Carolina Law School, he was a member of the North Carolina Law Review, a recipient of the Walter D. Clark Scholastic Achievement Award, and a member of the Order of the Coif.

After passing the Bar, Bill passed the CPA on his first try receiving his Certified Public Accountant certification.  He practiced law with the firm of Carruthers & Roth, was a frequent discussion leader and speaker at continuing legal education seminars sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants, received eight “Outstanding Discussion Leader” awards by that organization, and authored a two volume text in partnership taxation for use by CPA Association in their continuing education program.

In 1996, at the age of 48, Bill was diagnosed with Post-Polio syndrome, a progressive condition he continues to deal with today. Bill remains “Of Counsel” to the Carruthers & Roth law firm.  He resides in Greensboro with his wife, Melissa and son Will.
