Terrence “Terry” Akin assumed the role of chief executive officer of Cone Health on Oct. 1, 2014. As CEO, Akin is accountable for the realization of the strategic vision set by the Cone Health Board of Trustees, including successful navigation from “volume to value” in partnership with physicians and providers.

He joined Cone Health in July 2009 as chief operating officer and was named president in April 2012. Prior to joining Cone Health, Akin held progressively responsible senior executive positions at Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital and Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas (both part of the Texas Health Resources system). Previously, he held senior leadership roles at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and Washington Hospital Center (part of MedStar Health) in Washington, DC.

Akin earned an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania along with a master’s degree in social work from Penn. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Texas A&M University. Akin is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a recipient of the ACHE Regent’s Award for Leadership in 2017. He was also named to the Triad Business Journal’s “Most Admired CEO” list in 2016. Under his leadership, Cone Health has achieved numerous national accolades including: Watson Top 100 and Everest Awards; CMS “Hospital Compare” Five-Star Ratings for Quality; and Top performer status nationally among Medicare Shared Savings “Next Generation” participating ACOs.

Akin is a member of the North Carolina Healthcare Association (NCHA) Board of Directors, and chairman of the NC Healthcare Association Foundation. He also serves as the NCHA delegate to the American Hospital Association Regional Policy Board. Akin serves as immediate past chair of both the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce and Guilford County Economic Development Alliance. In addition, he co-chairs the “Ready for School, Ready for Life” collaborative aimed at early childhood education and school preparedness.

Past board service includes time with Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, the Greensboro Children’s Museum and the Guilford County Heart Walk. He is a former member of the NCHA Policy Development Committee and a founding board member of the North Carolina Center for Affordable Healthcare.
