GPD: Turning Challenges into Opportunities
Chief John Thompson joined the Greensboro Police Department in October 2003 coming here from Asheboro Police Department. He has served in myriad of roles in the department including all ranks in Patrol up to Patrol Bureau Chief, Vice Narcotics, Resource Management and Research and Planning. He is a member of North Carolina Police Executives Association, International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) and American Society of Evidence Based Policing (ASEBP).
Chief Thompson has a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from Pfeiffer University and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management and Bachelor of Arts Degree in Justice and Policy Studies from Guilford College. He also graduated with Honors from Southern Police Institute, Administrative Officers Course.
Chief Thompson has a depth of knowledge of the issues facing police departments from across the nation and an understandings the value of community trust. He has a reputation for combining innovative policing strategies, community engagement, and non-profit partners to address complex problems. He strives to understand the needs of the members of the department and to balance that against political and community cries for action.
Happily married with fraternal twins, a son and daughter, John enjoys his family life. He grew up in a large family with 8 siblings. He enjoys traveling and learning about other cultures.
