Fred Steck – Leaving A Legacy of Service Above Self

The late Fred Steck loved Project ReBuild and Greensboro Rotary’s participation in it.

At its annual Ambassadors Breakfast on November 5, Community Housing Solutions honored Fred’s commitment by naming its annual volunteer award the Fred Steck Volunteer Award. Fred’s widow, Vicki Steck, presented the first award in Fred’s name to Larry Morse.

Vicki shared in her comments how Fred would get the Project Rebuild dates early each year from CHS executive director Gene Brown so that he could tell Vicki to not schedule any vacation or trips during these two weeks in the fall. She also shared that as his health declined, giving up volunteering with Project Rebuild the last year was the most difficult thing to give up, even more so than his weekly golf game. She said he always encouraged people in the club to volunteer because “it would change their life.”

Gene wrote that Fred’s last words to him when he spoke with him over the phone when he was in the hospital were – “Gene, I am going to have Vicki give you all of my tools in my workshop so that others can use them to serve those in the communit.” His heart to serve still lives on as others use his tools to make repairs for low-income families.
