Life Lessons from Kay Yow
Robin Pate is currently the Director of Community Development with the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, but his history with Coach Kay Yow goes much deeper than that. Pate served for Coach Yow on staff at NC State for the Women’s Basketball program, and worked for her in a number of capacities, including Assistant Coach and Director of Basketball Operations, for over 15 years. He worked for her until her passing in January 2009.
Following her passing, Pate remained in the NC State Department of Athletics as Director of Compliance for 4 ½ years before joining the Kay Yow Cancer Fund staff in October 2013.
The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was officially founded on Dec. 3, 2007, from the vision of the organization’s namesake Kay Yow, former NC State University head women’s basketball coach. Coach Yow was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 before succumbing to the disease on Jan. 24, 2009. The Fund continues to grow and allocate funding for all women’s cancer research and related projects – and assist the underserved. To date, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund has allocated $5.38 Million.
Pate, originally from North Carolina and a graduate of NC State University, now lives with his wife, Christy, of 22 years in Apex, NC and has two daughters; Madison, 19 and Ashlynn, 16.
