Getting Women Into the Aviation Pipeline

Audrey started flying when she was 15 and, before going to college, had obtained her commercial pilot certificate as well as her Flight Instructor and Instrument Instructor certificates.  She attended college at Auburn University and graduated with a BS in aerospace engineering.

After graduating from Auburn, she went to Air Force pilot training at Vance AFB, OK, then moved to Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City.  She flew the E-3 (AWACS) for 8 years, deploying many times to Saudi Arabia, Oman, Turkey, and Panama.  She became an aircraft commander, in charge of a crew of 25-35 people and was upgraded to instructor and evaluator pilot in the E-3.  She flew over 2600 hours, including both combat and combat support time.  While in the Air Force, she was also the squadron safety officer and attended the Air Force school on conducting accident investigations.  Shortly after graduating, she was called to be the investigating officer for a U-2 accident at Osan Air Base in South Korea.

After leaving the Air Force, she taught physics in Davidson County for five years and attained a Masters of Education degree from UNCG.  She then moved into the position of Program Director for Aviation Management and Career Pilot programs at Guilford Technical Community College.  She has been in this position for nine years, teaching numerous aviation courses, managing the department, and filling the role of faculty advisor for the GTCC Flight Team.
