Debbie Yow, “Collegiate Athletics in 2017” (August 16)
August 16 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
Athletics Director, NC State University
Collegiate Athletics in 2017
When Debbie Yow became NC State’s director of athletics in 2010, her goal was to make her department one of the best in the nation. In six years, a number of steps to accomplish that goal have been taken by recalibrating competitive and academic expectations. NC State athletics has thrived under her leadership, posting five of the 10 highest National Directors’ Cup finishes for Competitive excellence in school history over the last five years, including a program-record 27th place finish in 2015. Additionally, NC State athletics has posted the three highest Graduation Success Rates and Federal Graduation Rates in program history over the last three years. Her NC State family roots are deep: Her oldest sister, Kay, served as women’s basketball coach for 34 years, and her younger sister, Susan, is the first-ever female All American in any women’s sport at NC State. Yow served as athletic director at the University of Maryland and Saint Louis University before coming home to NC State. She is the only female to ever be selected as president of the Division IA Athletic Directors’ Association , as well as President of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Her administrative career began at the University of Florida, after a successful coaching career for the University of Kentucky, Oral Roberts University and for the Florida Gators. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Elon University, a Master’s from Liberty University in Counseling and has been awarded honorary doctorates for professional achievement from Elon, Liberty and the United States Sports Academy.
