Standing Up to Cancer: Greensboro Pioneers a World-First Breakthrough in Radiation Therapy

Groundbreaking technology being pioneered at Cone Health is paving the way for cancer patients to literally stand up during treatment. As the first of its kind in the world, this innovative approach aims to deliver more comfortable, dignified, and potentially superior care, offering hope for improved outcomes. The presentation will highlight the current state of radiation therapy, the pioneering research in upright therapy taking place in Greensboro, and its potential to transform cancer care locally and globally.

Dr. BJ Sintay serves as the Executive Director of Radiation Oncology and Chief Physicist for Cone Health, as well as the Co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer for Fuse Oncology. He is a board-certified Therapeutic Medical Physicist with the American Board of Radiology.

Dr. Sintay earned dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from North Carolina State University in 2004. His early career included a brief tenure at NASA, where he was inspired to dedicate his life’s work to improving the lives of others. This directed him to complete a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences in 2008.

A prolific contributor to his field, Dr. Sintay has published over 75 scientific articles and holds multiple patents. His achievements have been recognized with numerous honors, including the prestigious Jimmy Fenn Career Achievement Award in Medical Physics.
