Austin Petty, Community Theatre of Greensboro
From the Victory of Racing to the Joy of Theatre
Austin Petty grew up in the world of racing watching his father, Kyle Petty, race in NASCAR’s elite series, and traveling with his older brother Adam while he toured the NASCAR Busch Series circuit. On the racing circuit, Adam always found the time to visit a local hospital and spend time with children. This was a passion for him. When Adam died in a racing accident in 2000, Austin and his family decided to continue his brother’s vision of opening a camp for children with chronic medical conditions and serious illnesses.
Austin Petty is the keeper of his brother Adam’s legacy and heir to the Petty name. For 8 years he played a large role in leading Victory Junction as its Chief Operating Officer & Executive Vice President. Austin oversaw multiple departments that make up the mission delivery team and lowered its operating budget from $8.2 million dollars to $6.1 million dollars while expanding their scope of services provided.
Austin first experienced the joy that a camp brings when he volunteered as a life guard at Camp Boggy Creek in Florida; part of Serious Fun Children’s Network that Victory Junction is a member. From dying his hair yellow to motivate his yellow team, to shaving his head to ensure that the campers with cancer did not feel out of place, Austin found his own passion for children and their families. That’s what inspired him to be a part of the leadership team at Victory Junction.
At 35, Austin has stepped out the family business in search for a new opportunity to bring his energy and expertise. He recently was announced as the Executive Director for the Community Theatre of Greensboro, the oldest Arts organization in Guilford County. The mission of the Community Theatre of Greensboro is: Bringing our diverse community together to learn about, experience, and celebrate the joys of theatre.
Austin has been married to his wife Sarah for 5 years and together they have two sons Adam Stonewall Christopher Petty (3.5 yrs.) and Rhett Lee Winston Petty (1 yr.). They reside in High Point and are active in the community and their church.
