Club to participate in 10 Million Meal Challenge to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank
Danny Finnegan, Contributor
The Rotary Club of Greensboro will participate in the 10 Million Meal Challenge in September, competing with other Rotary clubs in the Southeast to see which club can donate the most food, money and time. Our donations will go the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC.
There are four ways you can contribute to this effort to fight hunger in our community, where almost 1 in 5 people suffer from food insecurity.
- Take part in our virtual food drive. Follow the link (https://secure.qgiv.com/event/team/846319/) to the Rotary Club of Greensboro’s page on the Second Harvest website, then click on the “Virtual Food Drive Store” in the upper left hand corner of the page. You will see a variety of items you can purchase. We receive 1 “meal point” for every 1.2 pounds of food donated.
- Take part in our physical food drive. We will collect food items at each of our September meetings, so check your pantry or stop by the grocery store on the way to the Coliseum. We receive 1 “meal point” for every 1.2 pounds of food donated.
- Make a cash donation. Follow the link to the Rotary Club of Greensboro’s page on the Second Harvest website, then click on the “Donate” link in the upper right-hand corner of the page. Every $1 donated to Second Harvest can provide up to 7 meals for neighbors in need in our community, and we receive 4 “meal points” for every dollar donated.
- Volunteer your time. There are two volunteer sessions at Second Harvest, where we will help sort donations and create palettes. The first is on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 8:30 a.m. to noon; the second is on Thursday, Sept. 12 from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m. (You can arrive as late as 9 a.m. on Saturday or 5:30 on Thursday if you have a conflict). Both sessions will be at the Second Harvest Volunteer Center at 3610 Reed Street in Winston-Salem. Please email Danny Finnegan at [email protected] if you are interested in participating. We receive 10 “meal points” for every volunteer hour. (And Saturday volunteers receive lunch from Chic-Fil-A).
